TUZHE PACKAGING GUIDE
Cake Box Dimensions: Read Internal and External L × W × H
Learn how to separate usable internal cake box dimensions from finished external size, label L × W × H and send a clear dimension table to a supplier.

On this page
Cake box dimensions should identify both the measurement type and the reference direction. A line such as 300 × 300 × 180 mm is incomplete unless the quotation says whether those are usable internal dimensions or finished external dimensions, and which side is length, width and height. This distinction matters because the cake, board and decoration must fit the usable space, while shipping cartons, shelves and delivery bags are planned around the outside of the assembled box.
Separate five different measurement sets
| Measurement set | What it describes | Primary use |
|---|---|---|
| Finished cake envelope | The widest, deepest and highest occupied outline after decorations and permanent toppers are added. | Define where wall and lid clearance is needed. |
| Board footprint | The complete outside width and depth of the cake board, including tabs or handles. | Check the base fit and loading path. |
| Usable internal dimensions | The space available inside the assembled box after folded walls, locks, frames and inserts are considered. | Approve product fit. |
| Finished external dimensions | The maximum outside length, width and height of the closed box. | Plan carriers, master cartons, storage and delivery. |
| Blank or dieline dimensions | The flat sheet size and panel geometry before assembly. | Artwork, tooling and production planning; it is not the usable cake space. |
Read L × W × H as a defined convention
For rectangular cases, the FEFCO design code states that dimensions are normally expressed as internal dimensions in millimetres in the order length, breadth and height. It defines length as the longer opening dimension, breadth as the shorter opening dimension and height as the distance from the opening to the base. That is a useful industry convention, but a cake-box listing or supplier quotation may use a different naming rule. Ask the supplier to label the drawing rather than assuming the same convention applies.
Square cake boxes make the first two values equal, but the labels still matter when the structure has a front opening, handle, window, separate lid or loading direction. For a rectangular box, mark the front edge on the drawing and state whether the first value runs left to right or front to back. Keep one orientation across the dieline, sample photos and packing instructions.
Do not convert outside size into usable space by subtraction
Board thickness alone does not tell you how much usable space remains. Folded corners, double walls, locking tabs, a window frame, an insert or an overlapping lid can reduce the interior at specific positions. A nominal external height can also include a base, lid rim or handle that does not increase cake clearance.
Request both the proposed internal and external dimensions from the supplier. Then verify the internal values on an assembled sample at the places that matter: the board edges, the widest decoration, the highest topper and the path used to load or remove the cake. The related cake sizing guide explains how to build the finished cake envelope before this specification step.
Use a dimension table in the quotation
Replace a single unlabeled size line with a short table. Leave unknown values open for the supplier to propose and confirm on the sample.
| Field | Value to enter | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Cake and board envelope | Width × depth × finished height, in mm | Dated top and side photographs of the packed product. |
| Required usable internal space | Supplier proposal pending sample review | Dimensioned assembly drawing and physical fit trial. |
| Finished external size | Supplier to state for the closed box | Closed sample measured at the maximum outside points. |
| Opening and loading direction | Front, top, drawer or removable cover | Arrow on the drawing and one loading photograph. |
| Tolerance and measurement condition | Supplier to state | Quotation, approved specification and sample report. |
Check the sample in the order it will be used
- Measure the finished cake and board using one stated unit.
- Place the board through the real opening without bending the side walls.
- Close the lid through its full motion and observe the nearest decoration.
- Measure the usable internal space at the narrowest relevant position.
- Close the box and record the maximum external dimensions.
- Repeat the check with the delivery bag or master carton that will be used.
- Save the drawing, sample reference and photographs under one revision number.
The front-opening loading guide adds a path check for door-style cartons. For supplier handoff, add these fields to the custom packaging production brief.
Keep shipping dimensions separate
Carriers calculate shipment size from the outside of the completed package. FedEx guidance, for example, tells shippers to measure the length, width and height of the packed parcel; its training material also distinguishes printed interior box sizes from the outer dimensions that must be measured after packing. A retail cake box dimension therefore should not be copied into a shipping calculator unless it is also the measured outside size of the final shipping package.
This article provides a specification method, not a universal cake-box size chart. The required clearance, material, tolerance, quantity, price and production timing depend on the selected structure and the reviewed sample.
